This painting was created in March 2025 at Campeche Beach, in Florianópolis, through direct observation of the site over multiple sessions. It is composed of multiple sheets of paper that, when combined, form a mosaic.
In late 2023, I began creating watercolors based on the observation of people within the beach landscape. The paintings are made directly on site and allow me to observe affects, gestures, and movements: care, attention, play.
Adults look toward the horizon, watch their children, walk, hold hands, dive, surf, and pause in contemplation of the distant. Children focus on what is near: they touch the sand, crouch down, repeat gestures, run, jump, and discover.
The human figure brings scale to the landscape, helping to measure space. The world is always larger and more complex than what we are able to conceive. For this reason, I divide the painting into multiple sheets of paper, as a way of groping toward and giving form to space.
We live within a thin layer of space.
